In Britain's New Scientist, Physicist Bruce Elsmore of Cambridge University tells how the new technique of radio astronomy has detected and measured a very thin gas that surrounds the moon. Källa: Time Magazine, Monday, Sep. 23, 1957
The Moon has an atmosphere [faktum] so thin as to be almost negligible [värdering], with a total atmospheric mass of less than 104 kg.[34] One source of its atmosphere is outgassing—the release of gases such as radon that originate by radioactive decay processes within the crust and mantle.[citation needed] Another important source is generated through the process of sputtering, which involves the bombardment of micrometeorites, solar wind ions, electrons, and sunlight.[27] Gases that are released by sputtering can either reimplant into the regolith as a result of the Moon's gravity, or can be lost to space either by solar radiation pressure or by being swept away by the solar wind magnetic field if they are ionised. Phil Ponce speaks with NASA scientist, Alan Binder, about the new discovery of water on the moon
PHIL PONCE: Yesterday, NASA scientists announced evidence of water on the moon. With us now is Alan Binder, the mission's principal scientist. Welcome, Mr. Binder. Mr. Binder, water on the moon, where is it?
ALAN BINDER, NASA: Absolutely. It's at the North and South Poles. Källa: pbs.org March 6, 1998
Water found in moon matter counters the long-held belief that Earth's satellite is bone dry, researchers announced today.
The researchers believe the water was ejected along with magma when "fire fountains" erupted more than three billion years ago from the moon's surface. Källa: National Geographic July 9, 2008
